Abstract
This chapter analyzes the communication capabilities of Partitioned Optical Passive Stars (POPS) networks. POPS is a topological approach to providing reconfigurable multiple data channels using multiple non-hierarchical couplers. POPS topologies provide an architecture which supports flexible design trade-offs between system complexity, network throughput, power budget, and control overhead. It is shown that high performance and high coupler utilization are achieved for random, as well as regular communication patterns. These qualities are maintained as the POPS topologies are scaled to large systems.
