Structural equation models and path analysis

Abstract

In multiple regression analysis, we are normally concerned with the relationship between a single dependent variable and two or more independent variables. We recognize that these independent variables may be correlated with one another, but we are not always interested in the relationships among them. There are times, however, when we wish to examine the relationships among the independent variables in our analysis. In these instances, we must estimate the parameters of more than one regression equation because we are interested in a model that contains more than a single dependent variable. Indeed, we are interested in a model in which a dependent variable in one regression equation is an independent variable in another regression equation. Multiple equation models in which a dependent variable in one equation appears as an independent variable in another equation are referred to as structural equation models.
