The purpose of this study has been to analyze the principal dimensions of performance of the U.S. electric power industry, and to identify and quantify their structural determinants. In so doing, this study has described this important industry in detail, with particular attention to the roles of public versus private ownership, integration versus deintegrated operation, and competition versus regulated monopoly. Most especially, we have been interested in how these and other forces actually determine industry costs and prices.
