Theory and Research: An Anthropological Journey into the Diamond Industry

  • Dina Siegel

In this chapter, the theoretical approach, research methods, and the research questions of the study are presented. This is done from a cultural criminological perspective, which applies a combination of different ethnographic methods, including traditional participant observation and modern multisite and multilevel anthropological methods. The focus here is on access to the field, building trust relationships with informants, but also on some obstacles and taboos encountered in the field. Doing research in ‘dangerous fields’ sometimes demands very creative solutions. On the other hand, the importance of academic integrity and the protection of informants are emphasised here.
