Finite-Difference Methods

In previous chapters, we have discussed the equations governing the struc- ture of a steady flow and the evolution of an unsteady flow, and derived selected solutions for elementary flow configurations by analytical and simple numerical methods. To generate solutions for arbitrary boundary geometries and flow con- ditions, it is necessary to develop further general-purpose numerical methods. In this chapter, we discuss the choice of governing equations whose solution is sought, and the implementation of finite-difference methods for incompress- ible Newtonian flow. The discourse will introduce us to the main challenges encountered in computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
