They were there for all to see, but no one could read their secrets. Scattered across monuments four millennia old, cut into stony hillsides, and painted on the walls of the pharaonic tombs, the language of the ancients teased archaeologists, tempted them to false conclusions, frustrated them at every turn. What were the Egyptians trying to say? In the summer of 1799, a French expedition uncovered a slab of basalt 1.1 meters high and broke open the entire field of Egyptology. The Rosetta stone was inscribed in three tongues: the mysterious Egyptian heiroglyphs, a form of simplified Egyptian writing called demotic, and ancient Greek.
