Engaging Communities to Improve Health: Models, Evidence, and the Participatory Knowledge Translation (PaKT) Framework

Principles and Concepts of Behavioral Medicine

Abstract

Stakeholder engagement can improve the quality and utility of behavioral research and is increasingly being seen as a means to bridge the gap between research and practice. In this chapter, we review a range of approaches to support the use of research evidence for creating change in communities, including the early community trials for cardiovascular health, community organization and mobilization, ecological models, systems approaches, and participatory approaches to research. We then present the participatory knowledge translation (PaKT) framework, which emphasizes strategic stakeholder engagement, investment in human and social capital, and joint knowledge creation and transfer. These inputs translate into infrastructure development at the individual, organizational, and community levels. Long-term outcomes include improvements in community health/disparities, systems to support knowledge translation, and community action to improve health. The framework suggests that strategic investments and engagement can support the development of important social networks and “engines of change” in community settings, so that communities can identify and address issues of importance to them by leveraging the best available evidence.
