Abstract

Definition. Traditionally, death has been defined as the absence of spontaneous respirations and spontaneous pulse. A more contemporary definition of death includes the concept of brain death, defined as the permanent cessation of all brain function. This concept has evolved coincident with the increasing use of transplantation and, thus, is an important concept for the critical care practitioner to master.
