Under preinvasive disease, we consider three WHO (World Health Organization) recognized lesions of the lungs: squamous dysplasia (SD) as a precursor of squamous cell carcinoma, atypical adenomatous hyperplasia (AAH) as a precursor of adenocarcinoma, and diffuse idiopathic pulmonary neuroendocrine hyperplasia (DIPNECH) as a possible precursor of tumorlets and carcinoid tumors.
