Innovation in the health sector has been quite phenomenal over the past few decades as evidenced by rapid development of new drugs, medical devices and health management software underpinned by world class scientific research. However, these spectacular healthcare innovations have been accompanied by ever increasing costs to governments, hospitals, medical insurance companies and patients. In addition, poor countries are demanding that life-saving drugs be made available at much lower cost for humane reasons.

In addition to this cost issue, large pharmaceutical companies are faced with many blockbuster drugs coming off patent, being withdrawn from the market due to severe side effects and relatively weak pipelines of new drugs from their own large research laboratories.
