Abstract

M46 is an open star cluster in Puppis (part of the original constellation of Argo Navis). It was discovered by Charles Messier in 1771. It is 27 arcminutes across and contains about 150 stars, with the brightest being about magnitude 8.7. It is 5,400 light years away. It is quite often overlooked for the more famous M41 in Canis Major. It is never at its best when seen from the northern hemisphere but it looks quite superb 35° south of the equator, where most of the southern hemisphere’s population is gathered.
