The Almagest begins with a preface [I, 1; Hei 1, 4]1) in which the whole work is dedicated to a certain Syrus, about whom we know nothing. He must have been rather closely connected with Ptolemy, who dedicated other works to him also, thus the Planetary Hypotheses, the Handy Tables, and the Tetrabiblos, i.e. the main body of his astronomical and astrological writings.
