Case Studies

In this chapter, we will consider case studies that illustrate many of the concepts overviewed in the preceding chapters. We will review the characterization of synaptic noise from intracellular recordings during artificially activated states in vivo, as well as during Up- and Down-states. In a second example, we will present results from a study which aimed at characterizing synaptic noise from intracellular recordings in awake and naturally sleeping animals, thus providing the first estimates of synaptic conductances and fluctuations in the aroused brain.
