This chapter briefly covers the basic electrophysiological concepts that are used in the remainder of the book. Here, we overview models used to capture essential neuronal properties, such as ion channel dynamics and membrane excitability, the modeling of synaptic interactions, as well as the cable formalism that describes the spread of electrical activity along the dendritic tree of neurons.
