Among things that have facilitated my research, aside from people, summers on Cape Cod have been the most effective. About the time that Dave Wallace and I were working onThe Federalistpapers, Virginia and I rented a place in West Falmouth, and Dave and his family visited there for a while. Then we bought a place in Saconesset Hills, also in West Falmouth, and Dave rented a cottage right beside our place for part of the summer. This made it very easy to get together and discuss our work. My place has a garage made over into a small house that I use for research. The main room is big enough to hold a conference of four or five people, though two is better, and it has a large table and chairs. As a further feature, the typewriter sits on a door laid flat over two two-drawer files.
