Alan Stern would have preferred to publish his ‘Thousand Plutos’ article in Nature or Science. Then at least it would have attracted a little attention, among both his colleagues and the public at large. Which is always a good thing for a young and ambitious postdoc. But Glen Stewart of the University of Colorado in Boulder suggested that it would be better to just submit the article to Icarus, the smaller professional journal of solar system studies. After all, the article was not that revolutionary or convincing. And then, Icarus editor Joe Burns asked Stern if he was really sure he wanted to publish it.
