Abstract

‘I’ve just discovered a new planet.’

It was 11.30 in the morning on Wednesday, January 5, 2005. Mike Brown was pumped full of adrenaline. He could have run out of his office at the Caltech campus to shout the news from the rooftops. Or he could have sent an email to the science editor of the Los Angeles Times. But instead, he called his wife. ‘That’s nice, honey,’ replied Diane Binney, who was 3 months pregnant with their first child. ‘You won’t forget to pick up some milk on your way home this afternoon now, will you?’
