Abstract
Spyware and adware may track data related to individual users in order to construct a profile of each user. A user’s profile may then be used to target advertising to that particular user, for example. Perhaps the most prominent user tracking mechanism is the use of so-called cookies. This is the topic of the next section, which examines how cookies and other sources of data can be used to profile users.
