A variety of clinical assessment methods aid clinicians with diagnosis and treatment planning. Comprehensive assessment extends beyond determining which GAD diagnostic criteria and associated symptoms are present. Clinicians also evaluate any comorbid psychological and medical conditions, interpersonal functioning and social support systems, and idiosyncratic cognitive and behavioral patterns. Assessment typically commences with a clinical interview, serving as a diagnostic assessment tool as well as a means for gathering additional information needed for treatment planning. This chapter begins with a discussion of diagnostic assessment procedures and a review of available clinician-administered diagnostic interviews. Selected self-report measures of important constructs believed to underlie GAD symptoms are presented next.
