Living Related Donor Nephrectomy, Right Side

Laparoscopic techniques were first applied to procurement of the left kidney, where the longer vascular pedicle facilitates access. When the left kidney is unsuitable for anatomic reasons, as in the case presented below, the right kidney may be used. Applications of laparoscopic surgery to right donor nephrectomy have been slower in acceptance. This case was chosen to illustrate two possible approaches: an open approach using a small incision, and a hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery (HALS) approach. A purely laparoscopic technique has also been described, but since an incision must be made to retrieve the kidney intact and undamaged, most minimal-access surgeons make the incision at the beginning of the procedure and use a HALS method.
