Death Threats and Weapon Use

Children and adults frequently make death threats and/or use weapons in a variety of settings, including, schools, colleges, residences, workplaces, and various public settings. The presence or use of weapons weakens the ability of institutions of social control, such as the police, from maintaining that control through routine enforcement of laws. Individuals who carry or use weapons may take the law into their own hands and this often has lethal consequences.

Persons may have been threatened and carry weapons for protection, and others carry weapons so that they can threaten. The presence of weapons in schools establishes an atmosphere of threats and intimidation that may interfere with student learning (Aspy et al., 2004). In addition, the same situation exists in the workplace where it creates fear and impairs occupational functioning.
