Minimally Invasive Closed Reduction and Internal Fixation of Calcaneal Fractures
Calcaneal fractures are the most common fractures in the foot, but treatment protocols vary significantly depending upon surgeon and institute preference. As far back as 1984, Yuang-Zhang et al.1 published an approach where they combined manual manipulation of the heel with “percutaneous poking” of the fracture fragments. In 2001, Omoto et al.2 published their results after just manual manipulation of the heel after a calcaneus fracture. Their results are difficult to interpret because no standardized outcome tool is included on their results.
Buckley et al. showed that without stratification of the groups, the functional results after nonoperative care of displaced intraarticular calcaneal fractures were equivalent to those after operative care.3 This paper confirmed that not all calcaneal fractures are created equal, and that one should have very specific guidelines on how and when to surgically treat a fracture. With this in mind, there is a subgroup of calcaneal fractures that are best treated with minimally invasive techniques.
