Exercise Interventions to Reduce Lipids and Cardiovascular Disease Risk
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States . The lifetime risk of CVD was evaluated by the Framingham Heart Study and found to be 40% to 49% in men and 32% in women aged 40 to 94 years old . Prospective data demonstrate conclusively that exercise reduces the incidence of coronary artery disease [3,4].
Elevated serum cholesterol and an increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) have been clearly linked [5,6]. Strategies to improve serum cholesterol patterns focus on lifestyle changes in diet and exercise as well as cholesterol-lowering medications and dietary supplements.
The beneficial effects of exercise have been reliably demonstrated in research studies. Exercise can improve cardiovascular fitness, prevent obesity, and help maintain emotional well-being.
