This chapter presents a framework for a theoretical understanding of jitter in ring oscillators. As an introduction, Section 6.1 reviews some published theoretical techniques for harmonic and relaxation oscillators. Section 6.2 develops the theoretical framework, and Section 6.3 deals with some of the details involved in applying it to actual circuit design. Section 6.4 gives experimental results when the framework is applied to a specific ring oscillator.
