This chapter describes measurement techniques which can be used to verify performance as well as relate jitter measures in the time or frequency domain. Section 5.1 develops the mathematical framework for linking time domain (jitter) and frequency domain (phase noise) measures of oscillator performance. Section 5.2 describes some of the instrumentation commonly used to make time domain and frequency domain measurements of VCO and PLL performance, with emphasis on advantages and disadvantages of different approaches and limitations of each technique. Finally, Section 5.3 presents verification of the mathematical framework of Section 5.1 using example measurements from Section 5.2.
