This chapter will review the basic concepts of random signals and noise used in the following chapters. It is meant as a review for the reader who has studied random signals or as an introduction for the circuit designer new to the area. Readers who are familiar with random signals and noise may skip this chapter, although Secs. 4.4 and 4.5 may be useful for future chapters. The circuit designer who would like a more through treatment of random signals in general is referred to [111] and in the specific context of oscillators is referred to [73, 91, 92].
