Technical Leadership: An International Imperative
“To lead people, walk beside them …
As for the best leaders, the people do not notice their existence.
The next best, the people honor and praise.
The next, the people fear;
and the next, the people hate …
When the best leader’s work is done the people say,
“We did it ourselves!”
Leadership can be defined as the ability of an individual to influence, motivate, and enable others to contribute to the effectiveness and success of the organizations of which they are members1. In the early stages of a career, most people naturally focus on the technical aspects of their career. They begin their careers applying the technical disciplinary knowledge they acquired in college. However, technical leadership is something that should be considered and fostered early and often throughout our entire career. This applies to both leadership within our chosen technical discipline, as well as leadership of our profession.
