Simulation-based education in healthcare owes its origins mainly to the discipline of anesthesia. The practice of anesthesia has often been likened to the dynamic environment of aviation, where the stakes are high and safety is of paramount importance. In recent decades, a number of innovative and forward-thinking individuals have developed the discipline to a point where simulation-based education is an integral part of medical training in a wide array of medical disciplines, involving individual and team training, at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
