This chapter reviews the propagation of light waves in anisotropic media because most of the media used for controlling light propagation are anisotropic. This review will be extended to include devices that use the bulk effect of these phenomena. The bulk phenomena often become the basis of thin-film integrated-optics devices, which are described in Chap. 15.
