Minority Status Among Sexual Minority Women

This chapter examines the ways that minority status of African-American, Latina, or Asian-American women within sexual minority populations shapes the lived experience of women who identify as lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. Consider the following: In 2008 elections, voters elected Barbara “Bobbi” Lopez, an out Latina lesbian, to the San Francisco school board. In the same election, California voters cast statewide ballots eliminating the right to same-sex marriage and overwhelmingly voted for the first African American as president.
