Narrow gap semiconductors are members of the semiconductor family with narrow forbidden fundamental bands. Generally materials with forbidden bandwidth Eg smaller than 0.5 eV, or equivalently those with forbidden bandwidth corresponding to an infrared absorption cut-off wavelength over 2 ?m, are taken as narrow gap semiconductors (Long and Schmit 1973; Dingyuan Tang 1976).
