In the Confessions (Book XI, Chapter XIV), St. Augustine pondered the meaning of time. His answer is, “Quid ergo est tempus? Si nemo ex me quaerit, scio: si quaerenti explicare velim, nescio” [What is time then? If no one asks me, I know. If I want to explain it to those who ask, I no longer know]. Perhaps St. Augustine’s frustration is felt most by ethologists when dealing with play.
