# Matrices and Codes

Chapter

Many applications of the mathematics developed so far are most conveniently described in terms of matrices and linear algebra. So in this chapter we present a summary of matrix notation and its relationship to systems of linear equations.

Readers with some background in matrix theory will need at most to skim the first four sections of this chapter for notation. Readers for whom matrix theory is new will find our treatment rather terse, and are urged to refer, as needed, to any of the numerous textbooks available on linear algebra and matrices.
