The wonder of the unknown at Hadley-Apennine

Part of the Springer Praxis Books book series (PRAXIS)

With two maria and the Fra Mauro Formation sampled, the geologists were eager to attempt a highland site, but none of the ‘feature’ sites had been surveyed sufficiently to certify them for a landing. However, there was no shortage of attainable alternatives. In addition to the possibly volcanic Marius Hills and Davy Rille, there was the ‘dark mantling’ on Mare Serenitatis that Apollo 14 had been set to sample before it was redirected to Fra Mauro. But the 2 September 1970 decision to recast Apollo 15 as the first advanced ‘J’-mission made these seem rather tame.
