Air and Water Pollution

The focus of this chapter is on air and water pollution and its effects on pregnancy and fetal development. With a few exceptions, this topic has been poorly researched with regard to long-term effects on child learning and behavior. However, there is a rapidly expanding literature on the extent of air and water pollution in the United States and around the world. Studies of these effects on offspring are beginning to appear in highly regarded scientific journals. It is the purpose of this chapter to make the reader aware of the nature and extent of air and water pollution, and to summarize some of the available studies that report outcomes for infants and children.
