Wireless sensor networks are composed of devices characterized by limited energy and processing capabilities. This aspect becomes crucial in case of applications where a lot of redundant data go to the sink wasting precious bandwidth and energy resources. In the recent past, some solutions aimed at supporting reduction in energy consumption at network nodes through the use of data aggregation have been proposed. In this paper we perform an experimental study of data aggregation for wireless sensor networks with a focus on aggregator node positioning. In particular, we evaluate a data aggregation techniques which gathers a variable number of packets at fixed time intervals, and then provide, through simulations, some interesting results on advantageous positioning of aggregator nodes.
