The Changing Face of Insanity and Rise of the Institution
While lunatic asylums, hospitals for the insane and madhouses had existed prior to the nineteenth century, it was not until this century that these new emerging treatment regimes bought attention to the physical design of these places and what life was like within them. This attention was to lead to the systematic construction of new lunatic asylums.
