Synthetic Versatility and Structural Modularity in Organometallic Polymers

  • Chapter
  • 1292 Accesses

The structural and synthetic evolution surrounding organometallic polymers has given rise to great diversity in macromolecular materials. Modular approaches allow for the frontiers in this area to be pushed further, and at a faster pace. This chapter describes common designs and tunable structural features of various types of organometallic polymers with key emphasis on the manner in which the polymers are constructed. The concept of highly tunable systems without the need for redesign has inspired a new approach to organometallic polymers based on difunctional heterocyclic carbenes. This approach has several original design features, an ability to rapidly optimize or modulate structural characteristics, and provides rapid access to a diverse array of polymeric materials.
