Group theory arose from the study of polynomial equations. The solvability of an equation is determined by a group of permutations of its roots; before Abel [1824] and Galois [1830] mastered this relationship, it led Lagrange [1770] and Cauchy [1812] to investigate permutations and prove forerunners of the theorems that bear their names.
