Wavelets are one of the most well-known multiscale techniques and have been extensively explored in statistical applications in the 1990s and the 2000s. Wavelets are powerful mathematical tools that have been used with success in the compression of images and in the analysis of signals. They decompose signals and images in components spatially localized at different levels of resolution known as wavelet coefficients.
