Checklists and Travel Plans

Part of the Astronomers' Observing Guides book series (OBSERVING)

I have learnt a huge amount about how to enjoy astronomical excursions abroad, ever since my first trip to Tenerife, to see comet Halley, in 1986. What item would I place at the top of my packing list? The answer may surprise you. It is a pair of wax earplugs! I envy people who can sleep on a whim when they are tired. I cannot sleep, even when dog-tired, unless I am comfortable and there is zero noise in the room, hence the earplugs. As for people who can sleep on a whim, and snore like a 150 db road drill, thereby happily (and smugly) preventing others (even in the next room!) from sleeping, well, the electric chair is much too good for them!
