Shadow Bands and Other Phenomena

Part of the Astronomers' Observing Guides book series (OBSERVING)

Eclipses are not just about looking up into the sky. Savouring the twilight glow, the view of the planets and brightest stars, and trying to actually take in the fact that you are under the lunar shadow, are all part of the experience. Sadly, the time is all too short though and with only a matter of minutes (often panic-filled minutes if you are attempting photography too) you will always miss something. However, you should definitely try to spot the shadow bands. I have heard shadow bands described as elusive phenomena, but if you were in the Libyan Desert on 29 March 2006 you would definitely not have described them as elusive then.
