Some Very Keen Eclipse Chasers

Part of the Astronomers' Observing Guides book series (OBSERVING)

In any field of astronomy you will find diehard self-confessed addicts who are obsessed with their particular specialised interest. In the UK supernova patrollers Tom Boles and Mark Armstrong have checked two-thirds of a million galaxy images between them, by eye, over a 9 year period, to discover over 170 supernovae. Their fellow countryman Gary Poyner has made over 170,000 magnitude estimates of faint variable stars in a 30 year visual onslaught of his light polluted Birmingham skies.
