Preclinical Models of Regional Lymph Node Tumor Metastasis

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Cancer Treatment and Research ((CTAR,volume 135))

Metastasis to regional lymph nodes (RLNs) is clinically important. The adverse effects of RLN metastasis on patient survival from malignant tumors was first recognized in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by European physicians. Surgical management of these metastatic cancers was accomplished in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (1) but the overall patient survival following these technically successful operations remained fairly poor. The latest advance in the direction of simplicity and decreased morbidity is the sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy, an operation that revolutionized the management of melanoma and breast cancer (2–4), and has potential use in other malignancies. The anatomic and mechanical aspects of the sentinel node concept focused attention on mechanisms of RLN metastasis (5).
