REG Proteins and Other Growth Factors in Gastric Cancer

The regenerating gene (Reg) was originally isolated from regenerating rat pancreatic islets, and its gene product was evidenced to have a trophic effect on not only islet but also gastric epithelial cells. Recently, many Reg-related genes were isolated and revealed to constitute a multigene family. Although the biologic function of Reg family proteins remains to be elucidated, accumulating evidence has suggested that Reg family genes have an important role in the pathophysiology of inflammatory diseases and their related tumor development. Moreover, we have recently shown that REG Iα protein is an important downstream molecule of STAT3 signaling and mediates the antiapoptotic effect of STAT3 by activating the Akt/Bad/Bcl-xL pathway, suggesting that REG Iα protein has a critical antiapoptotic role in gastric tum-origenesis under STAT3 hyperactivation.
