Gastric Bypass: Gastrointestinal Bleeding
Gastrointestinal bleeding can be a complication of any gastrointestinal surgery. However, in bariatric surgery, and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in particular, gastrointestinal bleeding can cause symptoms in the postoperative period that are similar to other common postoperative complications (pulmonary embolism, leak/sepsis). The incidence of postoperative GIH after laparoscopic GBP ranges from 0.8% to 9.4%. In a recent series of 155 patients who underwent laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, the incidence of GIH was 3.2%.
Prompt recognition of bleeding, as well as prompt Identification of site, allows the bariatric surgeon to tailor the management of the patient and avoid unnecessary tests and procedures.
