There is no simple origin for this proposed new surgery specialty. On the contrary, the emergence of “acute care surgery” parallels both the development of trauma surgery in the United States over the past three decades and the apparent partitioning or fragmentation of general surgery. In keeping with a Darwinian adaptation process, the birth of acute care surgery should solidify the pivotal role of the broadly trained surgeon. The following is the proposed format and curriculum.
