Abstract

SUPERNOVA 1987A is the brightest supernova since Kepler’s supernova of 1604 AD, the first to be observed at all bands of the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio to gamma rays, and the first to be observed through its flash of neutrinos. Today, as we approach the 20th anniversary of its discovery (23 February 1987), SN1987A is giving us our first view of the birth of a supernova remnant, the glowing distribution of gas that results from the impact of the supernova debris with its circumstellar environment.
