Screening tests, also called diagnostic tests, are used in a wide variety of fields–public health, surgery, forensics, industrial quality management, satellite mapping, communications, banking, and many more. In the simplest case, a population is divided into two parts. A particular member of the population is infected with or free of a disease, a patient is about to reject a transplanted organ or not, a suspect is deceptive or telling the truth, a manufactured component is defective or fit for use, a remote mountainside is covered with snow or not, a transmitted bit of information is a 0 or a 1, or a prospective borrower will default on the loan or not.
