Abstract
When vaccination against smallpox became practical in the middle of the eighteenth century, Bernoulli (1760) became interested in the question of how life tables would be affected if deaths from smallpox were eliminated through mandatory vaccination. At the time, various life tables were available; these tables were based upon data from which it was possible to determine not just the age at death, but also whether death was due to smallpox or some other cause.
